Why I took it all off (well most of it anyway)

“I don’t think you ever stop giving. I really don’t. I think it’s an on-going process.
And it’s not just about being able to write a check. It’s being able to touch somebody’s life. “

- Oprah Winfrey

Through the years I have had a love/hate relationship with my hair. As a child all I ever wanted was long straight-brown-magazine-model-hair. I hated the fact that I was nowhere close to any of my peers. My head was no where near average or traditional. All of the ladies my hair stylist mom knew always said “I’d have to pay lots to get that hair!” I never understood the fascination from complete strangers which had even gone so far as fondling quite often!

Through the years I’ve learned to love and embrace the rough red mess on my head, all the while keeping somehow the issue at arms length (or sometimes shoulder length).

Before and after.

But somehow it became part of my personal brand identity. People know me by it, people remember me, and in a lot of cases it’s an icebreaker. My hair gives me confidence and so I decided it was time to give that confidence, facination and love- to someone else. Someone I don’t even know.

Locks of Love is an non-profit organization that collects human hair from around the world and fashions the donations into wigs for children living with cancer and chronic hair loss. So this past week I decided to chop ten inches off my not normal yet fondle-worthy locks and give it to someone who really needs it via Locks of Love. My hairdresser Teresa Fisher’s skill was most important in this process.

I believe that being able to help someone in need is a great thing, and that we all can do it in our own way. I love giving. Especially giving in non-traditional ways. For a child without hair, a wig can change their life from straight and narrow to curls and smiles. The memories of a new life with hair (natural or not) will last long after a cheque could. This non-traditional gift will touch a life. And that’s the best kind of giving.

Please visit my facebook page and share your thoughts and ideas on ways to help in non-traditional ways.
